Ingress protection (IP) rating

The IP rating of an LED display is an important consideration when choosing an LED video wall. The IP rating varies greatly among different display panels, and some panels may even be without an IP rating. Understanding how IP ratings are determined is the first step in choosing the right LED display for your needs. IP ratings, also called International Protection Markings, are classified into groups based on their resistance to different types of ingress.

Backlight configuration

An LED display is typically lighted by a white backlight composed of two strings of four series LEDs. The backlight is controlled by the LTC3524 and the RPROG value is 100k. This circuit allows each LED to draw 20mA of current. Using this configuration, a backlight can deliver up to 600mW of power and assume a forward voltage of 3.6V per LED. However, a more complex LED display configuration is possible.

Size limits

Traditionally, LED displays have been used for live video visualization, but their capabilities have since expanded to include advertising. These screens require at least a 192-by-128-pixel resolution for optimal video visualization. In fact, LED digital billboards can function as gigantic monitors that can visualize anything that is visible on a PC monitor. Despite their size, however, LED displays are still limited by their application. Listed below are the size limits of LED displays and their potential applications.

Brightness

LED displays use serial transmission to control the brightness. Instead of a switching signal, LEDs are controlled by a series of pulses, each of which represents a different grayscale value. Pulse width modulation allows users to change the brightness of LEDs periodically while minimizing the frequency of serial transmission. This method is effective for LEDs that display grayscale data and reduces eye strain. But it's not always possible to control the brightness of LED displays with serial transmission.

Air circulation system

Proper air circulation is essential to protect your LED display from water and moisture. Ensure the air circulation system you choose is closed loop to protect your LED display from contaminants and moisture. Ingress protection (IP) rating shows how resistant your LED display is to water, humidity, and solid object contact. There are several ways to protect your LED display in harsh climatic conditions.

Generally, the brightness of outdoor-rated LED displays is higher than those for indoor use. Moreover, outdoor-rated LED displays require brighter LEDs for better visibility. They might have a brightness rating of up to 7,000 nits. If you're planning to use the display outdoors, choose a screen with a brightness level that can withstand temperatures of over 100 F. Alternatively, you can choose a non-weatherproof LED display that uses lower light output.
